Men's Swimming & Diving Places Fifth at ECAC Championships
Release:   03/02/2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Erik Heinemann placed second in the 100 free and was one of three Bison to record program top-10 times to help the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team to a fifth-place finish at the ECAC Championships Sunday at Navy’s Lejeune Hall. The Bison entered the day sixth in the team standings and was able to jump ahead of Pittsburgh.

Louis Behnen (200 back) and Sean Lyons (1,000 free & 1,650 free) joined Heinemann in posting times on Bucknell’s top-10 lists.

Heinemann was fifth in the 100 free prelims and improved on that by three spots in the final as he lowered his time by more than one-half second. His finals time of 45.37 ranks fifth in school history. Heinemann was one of three Bison scorers in the 100 free as Steve Grune was seventh and Daniel Wallace was 13th.

Bucknell had one-quarter of the scorers in the 1,650 free as Lyons tied for sixth, Brian Phillips was eighth, Cameron Hackett posted a 15th-place finish and George Beatty was 16th. Lyons’ time of 15:51.06 ranks fifth in program history, while his 1,000 split of 9:38.89 is eighth in school annals.

Behnen followed up Saturday’s seventh-place finish in the 200 free with a fourth-place showing in the 200 back on Sunday. His time of 1:48.95 in the prelims ranked second in program history. He took another .35 off that time in the finals to finish two spots ahead of fellow freshman Jack Robinson.

Senior Mike Nicholson closed out an impressive career as Bucknell’s top finisher in the 200 breast, placing fifth. Junior Ben Seketa was seventh. Nicholson, who broke a 26-year-old school record in the 200 fly on Saturday, is a five-time school record holder and he has eight career top-five finishes at the ECAC Championships.

Jeff Shanley, who was 13th in the 200 fly, was Bucknell’s other individual point scorer, while Robinson, Grune, Behnen and Wallace swam to a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay to close the meet.

Patriot League champion Navy took home the team title by nearly 100 points over runner-up Binghamton.
