RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Bucknell women’s water polo team will be playing eight games in California over the next six days and it opened the trip with an 11-3 loss at Cal Baptist Tuesday evening at Lancer Aquatics Center. Hannah Sunday scored two of the Bison’s three goals.

Bucknell (5-4) could not overcome an early 3-1 deficit and trailed 6-1 at the half. Back-to-back goals by Julianne Valdes and Sunday late in the third quarter trimmed a nine-goal deficit to seven, but the Lancers tallied once in the final period for the final eight-goal margin.

Sunday’s first goal came midway through the first quarter and cut the Bison deficit to 2-1, but Cal Baptist tallied the next eight goals over a 16-minute span. Four different Lancers finished the contest with two goals.

Sunday, who now leads the team with 13 goals on the year, also drew a team-high four ejections on Tuesday. She now has 28 on the year.

Rena Heim started the game in goal for the Bison and recorded seven saves. Freshman Haley Derrod played the final quarter and stopped two shots. Meghan Rowland posted 10 saves for the Lancers.

Bucknell had won the last three meetings with Cal Baptist (10-8), which is receiving votes in the national poll.

The Bison will continue their trip Wednesday with a 10 p.m. Eastern contest at Pomona-Pitzer. Bucknell is 4-2 in that series and has won each of the last three meetings. The two squads have not faced each other since 2009.
