HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Bucknell men’s tennis team waited through a rainy South Carolina morning to take on George Mason at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Wednesday but, despite two strong wins, the squad suffered a 3-2 defeat in a shortened match format. The teams played one doubles match and four singles bouts to determine a victor, with each match consisting of one eight-game, pro set. The Bison, who fell to 0-8 with the loss, earned the doubles point and a win at No. 1 singles, but the Patriots, who improved to 6-5 overall, came out on top with victories at the remaining three singles spots.
Seniors Aidan Lynch and Chris Tortora represented the Bison in doubles play, battling to an 8-5 win over Taylor Sargent and Tanner Baine. Lynch, who now holds a 10-8 record in doubles play this season, moved into the 21st spot on the program’s all-time doubles wins list with the triumph, improving his career record to 37-25.
Sophomore Nick Bybel earned his second consecutive win and his fourth of the season in singles play, defeating Jimmy Davis by a score of 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Bybel continues to climb the ranks in the program’s record book and now ranks 20th in single season wins (20-8) and 30th in all-time victories (66-35).
“Even though we suffered another loss, we are continually getting better and working harder every week,” reflected Bybel. “We have different people stepping up in each match, and I’m looking forward to the damage we can do down the road.”
The Bison will travel back to Lewisburg for their next match, and will welcome an opponent to the Bucknell Tennis Courts for the first time this season when they square off against St. Joseph’s on Sunday. Action is set to being at 12 p.m.
