LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Jamie Romano scored five goals to lift Marist to a 10-5 win over Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at rain-soaked Graham Field. The Bison played well defensively and outscored the Red Foxes 5-2 over the last 16 minutes, but by that point Marist had built up an 8-0 lead.
Sophie Kleinert scored two goals and Christina Manis had a goal and two assists to lead the Bison (0-6), who won the time-of-possession battle but had difficulty solving the Marist (4-2) defense. Bucknell outshot Marist (24-15), won more draws (9-8), had more ground balls (17-16) and committed fewer turnovers (17-20), but Abigail Witczak logged eight saves for Marist and the Bison converted just 2 of 8 free-position shots.
There was a big momentum swing in the opening three minutes of the contest. Bridget Shaffrey put the ball in the net for the Bison, but the goal was waved off when Shaffrey's stick connected with a Marist player on her follow-through. The Red Foxes then raced the ball up the field and Hayley Burke fed Jackie DiMaria for a quick extra-man goal.
Allison Gionta and Kirsten Viscout made it 3-0 with a pair of goals about two minutes apart, and after 10 minutes of scoreless play with heavy rain falling, Romano scored twice to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 lead at the half.
Gionta's unassisted tally with 18:27 to play put Marist on top 8-0, but then Bucknell came alive offensively in the final 16 minutes. Emily Becker earned a free-position chance after being fouled on a clear path to the goal. Becker was knocked down again on her first 8-meter attempt, and then she cashed in on her second attempt from the top of the arc for her first goal of the season.
Emily Kookogey also scored on a free-position attempt later in the half, and twice Manis fed Kleinert on the right side of the crease for goals. Manis finished the scoring herself after taking a nice feed from Maddy Molinari in transition.
In addition to her two goals, Kleinert tallied three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Katelyn Miller forced three turnovers and picked up three draw controls, Caroline Collins also collected three draws.
It was a foul-plagued game, with the Bison whistled for 32 fouls and Marist 28.
Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday against No. 11/19 Navy in a Patriot League matchup at Graham Field at 1 p.m.
