CLAREMONT, Calif. – Mackenzie Ferry scored four goals to lead Bucknell, but Pomona-Pitzer outscored the Bison by a 4-2 margin in overtime to defeat Bucknell 11-9 Wednesday evening. The Bison fell to 5-5 on the season, while the Sagehens improved to 10-7.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than one goal until the second three-minute overtime period. There were seven ties during regulation and eight ties overall.
A goal by Julianne Valdes with 2:06 to play in regulation gave Bucknell a late 7-6 advantage. However, Pomona-Pitzer’s Alyssa Woodward evened the score once again on the next possession.
Four different Sagehens contributed goals in overtime. Stephanie Ovalle netted both of Bucknell’s OT scores, but the Bison never led in the extra sessions. A Sallie Walecka goal with 1:23 to play gave Pomona-Pitzer just the second multi-goal lead of the game and the score finished that way (11-9).
Eleanor Marrs put together a strong all-around game with two goals, a career high-tying four assists, three sprints won, one steal and one field block.
Hannah Sunday added five more ejections drawn, while Valdes posted one goal and one assist to go along with two sprints won.
Both teams scored at least one goal in every period, including each three-minute overtime session.
Bucknell will play its first multi-game day of its trip to California on Thursday when it faces Concordia (3 p.m.) and Long Beach State (10 p.m.).
