WEST POINT, N.Y. -- John Glesener scored five goals to lift 20th-ranked Army to an 11-6 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. Thomas Flibotte scored twice for the Bison, who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.
The loss dropped Bucknell to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League. The Bison had a couple of early one-goal leads in this one, but the Black Knights (6-3, 4-1 PL) took control with a 7-1 run over the second and third periods.
Army came into the game with the nation's top-ranked defense, allowing only 5.5 goals per game. Bucknell scored twice in succession through Alex Spring and Flibotte to go up 2-1. After Glesener tied it late in the first quarter, the Bison went back up 3-2 on another Flibotte unassisted tally just 2:02 into the second quarter.
Army went back ahead with two goals in seven seconds. First it was Gunnar Miller unassisted at 8:14 of the second, and then right off the draw faceoff man Alex Daly scored to make it 4-3 Army. Alex Newsome and Tom Black swapped extra-man goals before Will Mazzone tallied with 23 seconds remaining to give Army a 6-4 lead at the half.
The Black Knights then outscored Bucknell 3-0 in the third quarter to go up 9-4. David Dickson and Sean Doyle found the net in the fourth, but Glesener added a pair of insurance goals to prevent a Bison comeback.
Bucknell outshot Army 35-28, but Army won 15 of the 21 faceoffs which led to a 36-23 edge in ground balls. Daly was 14-for-18 with 10 ground balls for the Black Knights. The Bison were 2-for-3 on EMO and are now 7-for-9 in the last four games.
Spring's goal was the first of his career and the first of the season by a Bison long-stick. Sam Grinberg finished with six saves, while Army's Sam Somers had nine.
Bucknell will battle another ranked team when it travels to No. 16/18 Fairfield on Tuesday. Please note that the time of that game has been changed to 1 p.m.
