Women's Water Polo Splits with No. 9 Princeton, Mercyhurst
Release:   03/29/2014

ERIE, Pa. – Senior captains Julianne Valdes and Mackenzie Ferry combined for seven goals and Hannah Sunday drew seven ejections to lead the Bucknell women’s water polo team to an 11-5 victory over Mercyhurst Saturday evening. The win helped the Bison salvage a 1-1 day after a 14-6 loss to No. 9 Princeton earlier in the afternoon.

Saturday’s contests were Bucknell’s (8-10, 1-1 CWPA Southern Division) first league games of the season. The Bison improved to 10-1 all-time against the Lakers, while the Tigers were the seventh ranked foe for Bucknell.

Valdes netted a team-high four goals and dished out two assists against Mercyhurst, while Ferry added three goals and two assists. Bucknell’s 11 goals equaled a season high.

Sunday’s seven ejections drawn were a career high and marked the most by a Bison since Taylor Barnett totaled seven in April 2012 vs. George Washington. She also had two ejections drawn earlier in the day against Princeton and now has 66 on the year, good for No. 7 on the program’s single-season ledger.

Bucknell trailed Mercyhurst 2-1 following the first period, but a six-goal second quarter gave the Bison the lead for good. The Lakers netted just three goals over the final 24 minutes of play.

Princeton (23-1), which defeated Mercyhurst 13-9 Saturday morning, scored at least three goals in each period to defeat the Bison for the second time this year. Martine McCarthy was Bucknell’s offensive standout with two goals and a career-high five ejections drawn. Tegan Stanbach produced one goal and one assist, while Ferry posted two assists.

Bucknell will wrap up the regular season next weekend at home. The Bison will host Harvard, George Washington and Brown. Sunday’s contest vs. Brown will air on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
