Bucknell 9, St. Francis 6
LORETTO, Pa. – Storms caused a 90-minute delay in the middle of the first game of the afternoon and forced the cancellation of the second, but the Bucknell softball team battled through the inclement weather to take a 9-6 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on the Red Flash Softball Field on Tuesday. The Bison, who continued their impressive offensive streak with a 12-hit outing, improved to 18-21 overall with the win, while the Red Flash dropped to 21-18 with the defeat.
Freshman Carolyn Wan had an outstanding day at the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while sophomore Cheyanna Young and senior Courtney Conover connected twice, driving in two and three runs, respectively. Five additional Bison each recorded hits in the contest.
Bucknell worked its way onto the board in the top of the second inning, as freshman Jacklyn Tyburk scored on an error and Conover drove in Wan, who had singled earlier in the inning, giving the squad a 2-0 lead over the home team. The Red Flash recorded a hit in the bottom of the stanza but were unable to get past first base, allowing the Bison to build on their advantage when senior Mallory Lyons scored on a Young single in the top of the third.
The 3-0 lead was cut to just a one-run edge when St. Francis’ Tyler Parsons hit a two-RBI homer to left field in the bottom of the third, but the Bison responded immediately, regaining their three-run advantage when Conover drove in sophomore Amanda Fazio and Wan with a single through the left side. The 5-2 lead stood through the fourth inning, but the Red Flash knotted the score at 5-5 with a three-run fifth stanza.
The game remained tied through a quiet sixth inning, but the Bison exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-5 lead. Junior Cydnee Sanders, who singled to center field to get on base, scored on an error to snap the tie, and pinch runner Lauren Swindell recorded the second run of the inning, also on an error. Sophomore Cindy Cherness singled to shortstop directly after a pitching change, permitting Tyburk to score, and then Cherness wrapped up the scoring when a Wan single brought her home. The Red Flash managed to get one back in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bison.
Cherness earned the win for Bucknell, pitching 2.2 innings in relief during which she allowed one earned run and two hits while walking one and striking out three. Fazio made her second consecutive start, allowing six hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings of action.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Colgate. The Bison and the Raiders will conclude the three-game series on Sunday with a single game that is also scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
