LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s tennis team recently announced the addition of the three-member class of 2018 to its roster for the fall of 2014, and the trio of talented incoming freshmen is expected to have an immediate impact on the up-and-coming program.
Joining the Bison in 2014 will be Ben Gerber (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill High School), Max Kane (Newtown Square, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) and Dan Wright (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Saddle River Day School).
“I believe all three of these guys are going to come in and help take the program to another level instantly,” commented head coach Craig Schwartz on his first recruiting class. “They will have an immediate impact in both the singles and doubles lineup. All of them will prove to be valuable pieces to the puzzle next season and will help to give us more depth in the lineup. I feel that the sky is the limit for these talented players.”
Below is a closer look at the Bucknell men’s tennis class of 2018:
Ben Gerber (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill High School)
Attended East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina…played on the varsity tennis team during his freshman year…went undefeated in conference play during that season…earned All-Conference honors as a rookie…son of Ann and David Gerber…has three siblings, Jake, Brater and Hank…father, David, played lacrosse at Cornell…uncle, Ralph Griesser, played football at Michigan…uncle, Grant Griesser, played baseball at Miami of Ohio before competing in the minor leagues.
Schwartz on Gerber: “I feel that Ben will come in and compete for a spot in the bottom half of the lineup. His all-court fighting spirit and on-court demeanor will definitely earn him many wins over his college career. I am excited to add him to the mix of talent we have coming in.”
Max Kane (Newtown Square, Pa./The Episcopal Academy)
Played four years of varsity tennis at the Episcopal Academy…selected as an All-Main Line Athlete for three consecutive seasons…earned the 2012 Junior Sportsmanship Award…received the Middle States Most Improved Award in 2013…the 2013 Inter-Ac #1 singles champion…Episcopal Academy Athlete of the Month in April 2014…ranked as high as 136th in the nation…an AP Scholar…received the Robert R. Bishop National English Honor Society Award…son of Paula Ko and Robert Kane…has two younger siblings, Katie and Daniel.
Schwartz on Kane: “Max is a big kid with a very aggressive all-court game. He is very steady from the baseline and also has solid volleys. I believe that his serve will be a huge weapon for him and will help him win many free points. I look forward to seeing Max really develop his game here at Bucknell.”
Dan Wright (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Saddle River Day School)
Captained the varsity tennis team for four years at Saddle River Day School…played at the No. 1 singles spot for all four years…named team MVP for his first three seasons…selected to the All-County first team for three consecutive seasons…competed in the semifinals of the Bergen County Small Schools Tournament as a freshman and sophomore before advancing to the finals as a junior…played in the NJ State Tournament quarterfinals as a junior, becoming the first player in school history to accomplish the feat…earned the NJIC Sportsmanship Award in 2013…ranked as high as 174th nationally…son of Julie and Matthew Wright…has two brothers, Thomas and Dominic…born in Slough, England.
Schwartz on Wright: “Daniel brings a steady all-court game to the table and he has a very good feel for the ball, which will help him wear down his opponents. I think one of his biggest attributes will be his grinding style. I look forward to seeing Daniel build his physical strength, which will ultimately raise his game to the next level.”
