LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore Jarett Witzal of the Bucknell men's lacrosse team was rewarded for a big game against Lafayette on Saturday with Corvias Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week honors. In Bucknell's 11-7 victory over the Leopards, Witzal won 17 of 21 faceoffs (.810) and picked up a season-high 10 ground balls.
Witzal went 7-for-9 at the X during Bucknell's decisive seven-goal third quarter. The Bison trailed 5-2 early in the period, but they outscored Lafayette 7-1 over the final 13:08 of the quarter to take the lead for good.
Witzal upped his season faceoff percentage from .527 entering the game to .553 afterward. His 67 ground balls are fifth-most in the Patriot League.
Only a sophomore, Witzal already ranks third on Bucknell's career chart for faceoff wins with 297. His .588 career faceoff percentage is the best in school history among those with at least 250 attempts.
With the victory at Lafayette, Bucknell improved to 3-4 in Patriot League play (5-7 overall), setting up a playoff-style game at Lehigh in the regular-season finale on Friday night. The winner will qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, while the loser will be eliminated from postseason contention.
