WORCESTER, Mass. – Bucknell ensured itself of at least a .500 season for the second time in three years with a thrilling five-set win over Holy Cross in a Patriot League volleyball match Saturday night at the Hart Center. The Bison improved to 14-13 overall and 8-7 in the conference, winning 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14.
It was a balanced attack for Bucknell which finished with 14 blocks and had four players finish with double-digit kills and five players have total double-digit digs. Sophomore Sophie Bullard recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs, while senior Hailey Stout had a double-double of 10 kills and 18 digs.
Bucknell trailed 14-12 in the final set before scoring the final four points to get the win. Senior Stefanie Alpert started the rally with a kill, and the Bison then tied the match on a block by sophomore Mimi Richards and senior Luz Nagle. Alpert followed with another kill, and Richards clinched the win with her 11th kill of the match. Nagle and Alpert each had five block assists.
Richards’ 11 kills came with a .333 hitting percentage, and she also added six block assists. Senior Celeste Barker kept up her incredible play as she nears the end of her collegiate career, posting seven block assists and eight kills. Barkers has had at least six total blocks and six kills in four of the past five matches.
Alpert finished with 11 kills and had four of the team’s six aces on the night. Sophomore Brooke Stark tallied 20 digs, while a pair of freshmen, Alexa Bonanno and Delanie Lewis, contributed 10 apiece. Nagle and Bonanno put up nearly identical assist numbers with 23 and 22, respectively.
Holy Cross, which dropped to 4-24 overall and 1-14 in the Patriot League, was led by 20 kills from Clare Honan. Katie Kerins was next with 15 kills, while Rachel Harding and Allie Barry had 11 apiece.
