NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Bucknell used two double-digit runs in the first half to get past Iona, 60-53, in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Bison improved to 6-3 on the season while upping their winning streak to four straight games.

Junior Kaitlyn Slagus registered her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and junior Maegan Mikkelsen scored a career-high 11 points off the bench. Junior Kyi English joined the pair in double-figures with 14 points while adding four assists.

Bucknell opened the game with a 14-0 run, holding Iona scoreless for the first 6:04 of play. Four players scored for the Bison during the run, led by junior Kate Walker with five points, while the Gaels missed their first eight shots.

The Gaels battled back in the second quarter to cut their deficit to three, 20-17, only to see the Bison go on a 13-0 run over the final 3:05 of the half. Mikkelsen established a career high in points during that stretch alone, scoring seven on a pair of free throws, a 3-pointer, and a layup.

The Bison never trailed in the game, leading for 39:38. Iona, which dropped to 0-6 on the season, fought back multiple times in the second half, including an 11-0 run between the third and fourth quarters to get within six, 45-39 with 8:15 to play.

English did most of her scoring from the line, making 10 of her 13 attempts. The Bison were 19-of-27 from the stripe as a team, while the Gaels made all six of their attempts.

Bucknell improved to 6-0 when it scores at least 60 points. The Bison are averaging 66.5 points and allowing 57.3 during their four-game winning streak.

Iona was held to 33 percent shooting, including a 17 percent mark from beyond the arc. Alexis Lewis recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bison have a two-week break before returning to action for another non-conference road game when they travel to play Fordham on Sunday, Dec. 17. The Rams qualified for the WNIT in three of the past four seasons.
