HAMPTON, Va. – Tyler Smith went 3-0 during the Bucknell wrestling team's matches against Oklahoma, Fresno State and No. 20 Lock Haven at the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.

Smith registered bonus points for the Bison in all three of his victories in the 141-pound weight class, scoring one by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision. With his perfect day, the senior improved to 16-3, and 8-0 in dual action, on the season.

Smith's efforts were not enough for Bucknell to post a team victory in the highly competitive York River Pool, which was the only pool featuring four teams. The Bison fell to the Sooners (21-13), Bulldogs (37-9) and Bald Eagles (31-9) to move to 1-8 (0-2 EIWA) in 2017-18.

Smith, who was slotted No. 14 in the most recent Intermat rankings, opened his day with a 10-2 victory by major decision over Oklahoma's Mike Longo. He then made quick work of Fresno State's Chris De Loza, pinning the freshman in just 32 seconds. It was the fastest pin by a Bison this season and the quickest of Smith's collegiate career.

In his final bout of the day, Smith scored his first win by technical fall in 2017-18. At the end of the second period, he led Lock Haven's Kyle Shoop, 5-0. He ultimately racked up 12 points, eight of which came in the final 30 seconds on two takedowns and a four-point near fall, and a 2:44 advantage in riding time to walk away an 18-3 victor.

Against the Sooners, the Bison took three of the final five bouts, with D.J. Hollingshead (165), Garrett Hoffman (197) and Brandon Stokes (285) all notching their wins by decision. Stokes's 9-4 victory over Marquise Overton was his first in a dual meet; the sophomore, who started the year at 174 pounds, later toppled Lock Haven's Derek Dragon by a decisive 13-1 major decision.

Drew Phipps (184) picked up his 13th victory of the season, placing him in a tie for second on the team with Frankie Guida, Jr., by downing Fresno State's Angel Solis, 5-2. Both of Phipps's losses were tight; he fell to Oklahoma's Matthew Waddell, 5-3, and Lock Haven's Corey Hazel, 2-1.

Joey Gould (133) returned to the Bison lineup and dropped both of his bouts by a single point. After falling to Fresno State's Trevor Williams, 3-2, he was downed by Lock Haven's D.J. Fehlman in the first overtime period, 5-4.

Bucknell returns to action next week by hosting Harvard (Friday, Jan. 19) and Brown (Saturday, Jan. 20) in Davis Gym.
