LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Kali Hyham scored a team-high four goals in her first career home game and the Bucknell women’s water polo team overcame a slow start to defeat Gannon 17-9 Saturday in the first game of the Bison Invitational. The Bison, who improved to 3-2 on the season, will host four games at Kinney Natatorium this weekend.
Junior Emily Konishi and freshman Molly Teresi added three goals apiece, while Gigi Rojahn scored twice as Bucknell netted its most goals since defeating Mercyhurst 17-5 last Feb. 18. The Bison are now averaging more than 15 goals per game in their three victories this season.
The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter of play, but Bucknell hit the post and crossbar of the goal at least four times in the period. The Bison then took control of the contest by outscoring the Golden Knights 6-1 in the second quarter. Hyham tallied two of her goals during that period, while Konishi registered a goal on a five-meter penalty shot.
Bucknell’s run extended to 8-1 after it scored the first two goals of the second half to go up 10-3.
Manuela Herrera had a strong game in cage for the Bison, recording 11 saves. She crossed the 400-save mark for her career and she ranks fifth in program history in saves.
Campbell Ruh led Gannon (0-1), which was playing its first game of the season, with four goals and one assist on 10 shots. She also drew a game-high five ejections.
Bucknell, which has won its home opener nine straight years, gets just a few hours of rest before its next game, a 3:30 p.m. contest against Saint Francis (Pa.) that will air on the Patriot League Network.
