UPDATE: Shortly after he was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday morning, Jeff Gottesman was also selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team picked up another major award on Thursday, as junior righthanded pitcher Jeff Gottesman was selected as the Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while also earning a spot on the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team. Gottesman, who has been one of the conference’s top pitchers all season, maintains a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in accounting and financial management. Gottesman was also named to the 12-man Academic All-Patriot League Team, where he was joined by Bucknell sophomore Tyler Wincig.

Bucknell boasts two of the Patriot League’s elite starting pitchers in Connor Van Hoose and Jeff Gottesman. Earlier in the week, Van Hoose was picked as the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, and now Gottesman collects some hardware as the league’s top scholar-athlete. With his selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the Academic All-District Team, Gottesman is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in June.

Gottesman has been a Saturday starter for the Bison throughout conference play, and he enters the postseason with a 5-3 record and a stellar 2.12 earned-run average while limiting opposing batters to a .198 average. The 2.12 ERA is the best on the team and third-best in the Patriot League. He also ranks fourth in the league in innings pitched (68.0), fifth in opponent batting average, and ninth in strikeouts (60).

In Patriot League play, Gottesman is 4-3 with a 1.94 ERA while averaging better than a strikeout per inning. In his last five starts, he has conceded only three earned runs in 34 innings for a tidy 0.79 ERA. Gottesman set the tone for the season by allowing only a single run on a solo homer in 4.2 innings of relief against No. 3 Arkansas on the season’s opening weekend. Perhaps his best performance of the year came in a key win at Holy Cross, when he spun 8.0 innings of two-hit ball while striking out a career-high 11. Gottesman also had a start at Army where he did not allow an earned run over 7.0 innings, and he allowed only two hits over 7.0 innings in a non-league win over Villanova.

Off the diamond, Gottesman has excelled in his finance studies, and he also has a minor in Spanish. He is the recipient of the President’s Award for Academic Achievement and the ECAC Merit Award. He was inducted into the Mortar Board Honor Society and the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. Gottesman participates in the Student Managed Investment Fund, which is a select group of students that manages approximately $1.7 million of Bucknell’s endowment. He is a member of the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute, and last summer he interned as an investment banking summer analyst at Imperial Capital in New York City.

Likewise, Wincig has also been an impact student-athlete on and off the field. A sophomore with a 3.94 GPA in accounting and financial management, Wincig has done a little bit of everything for the Bison this spring. He has played right field and first base, and has even made seven appearances on the mound. At the plate, he is hitting .297 while leading the Patriot League with a .455 on-base percentage. He ranks fourth in the league in walks with 31, and he has a .533 OBP when leading off an inning.

Wincig, who had a four-hit game against Massachusetts earlier in the year, will be playing for Martha’s Vineyard in the Futures League this summer. He is also a member of the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute.

Bucknell is 16-25-1 overall and 13-11-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison are the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, which begins with the semifinal round this Saturday and Sunday. Bucknell will play a best-two-of-three series at No. 2 Army, starting with two games on Saturday. All of the action can be seen on the Patriot League Network at PatriotLeague.tv.
