TAMPA, Fla. – Bucknell’s Matthew Fay finished 36th in the pole vault Thursday morning at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the USF Track & Field Stadium. Fay, one of two Bucknell men’s track and field athletes to qualify for the meet, competed at the event for the second straight season.
Fay cleared 15-11 on Thursday, which was his third-best height this season. His career-best height is 16-10 ¾, which he accomplished while finishing 21st at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Kentucky.
Including Fay, three Patriot League student-athletes competed in the pole vault. Army West Point senior Lee Bares cleared 16-10 ¾ to finish 22nd, while Navy junior Stefano Pineda also cleared 15-11 to take 33rd.
Samford Tray Oates took first in the event with a height of 17-6 ½. The top 12 finishers qualified for the NCAA Championships, and the last qualifier cleared 17-2 ¾.
Still set to compete for the Bucknell men is Aidan Krombolz. The freshman will participate in the javelin on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
