LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior pitcher Jeff Gottesman has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gottesman, who was also this year’s Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was a Third Team selection.
Gottesman was one of the Patriot League’s premier starting pitchers throughout the season, and he did it while maintaining a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average in accounting and financial management.
He becomes the 29th national Academic All-American from the Bison baseball program, and the first since Jason Buursma in 2008. Bucknell has now claimed 134 Academic All-Americans since 1970, one of the highest totals in the nation.
Gottesman was a Saturday starter for the Bison throughout conference play, and he finished the season with a 5-4 record and a 2.85 earned-run average while limiting opposing batters to a .217 average. He ranked sixth in the Patriot League in innings pitched (72.2) and 10th in strikeouts (61).
In Patriot League play, Gottesman went 4-3 with a 1.94 ERA while averaging better than a strikeout per inning. In his last five starts of the regular season, he conceded only three earned runs in 34 innings for a tidy 0.79 ERA. Gottesman set the tone for the season by allowing only a single run on a solo homer in 4.2 innings of relief against No. 3 Arkansas on the season’s opening weekend. Perhaps his best performance of the year came in a key win at Holy Cross, when he spun 8.0 innings of two-hit ball while striking out a career-high 11. Gottesman also had a start at Army where he did not allow an earned run over 7.0 innings, and he allowed only two hits over 7.0 innings in a non-league win over Villanova.
Off the diamond, Gottesman has excelled in his finance studies, and he also has a minor in Spanish. He is the recipient of the President’s Award for Academic Achievement and the ECAC Merit Award. He was inducted into the Mortar Board Honor Society and the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. Gottesman participates in the Student Managed Investment Fund, which is a select group of students that manages approximately $1.7 million of Bucknell’s endowment. He is a member of the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute, and last summer he interned as an investment banking summer analyst at Imperial Capital in New York City.
