Located across Route 15 from the main Bucknell University campus at the West Fields complex, Eugene B. Depew Field was formally dedicated on April 17, 2003. Depew, who is a 1971 Bucknell graduate, was named the Bison baseball coach in 1982. The longest-tenured baseball coach in Bucknell history, Depew participated on and served as a co-captain of the football team and later served as an assistant football coach prior to becoming the baseball mentor.
The baseball team moved its home from the spot where the football practice field currently is adjacent to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium to its current location in the spring of 1990.
Depew Field and the neighboring Becker Field, home of the Bison softball team, have undergone major renovations in recent years. In the fall of 2009, synthetic FieldTurf was installed at Depew Field. The new playing surface features the latest in-filled, grass-like artificial turf, manufactured by FieldTurf and designed to meet baseball specifications. The surface is similar to the FieldTurf that has been in use at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium since 2001. The initial stages of the renovations of both the Depew Field and Becker Field focused on improving the student-athlete components of the facility. Renovations continued in 2010 with the replacement of dugouts, fencing and backstop systems and the installation of new scoreboards. The final phase of the renovations involves the construction of spectator grandstands and press box facilities. Fundraising is ongoing for that project.
