LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the seventh consecutive season the Bucknell men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their schedule with an unscored meet against UMBC. This year’s matchup is slated for Saturday (Oct. 5) at 1 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium.

The Bucknell women are coming off a second-place finish at last year’s Patriot League Championships and were picked to finish third behind two-time defending champion Navy and newcomer Boston University in the 2013-14 preseason poll, which was released Thursday by the league office. The Bison, who were 5-5 in regular-season meets last year, had a record-tying seven individual champions at last February’s championship meet and seven of their nine All-Patriot League selections return.

The Bucknell men were 6-4 in regular-season meets and placed third at last year’s Patriot League Championships. The Bison were picked fourth in the preseason poll, one spot behind 2013 championship runner-up Army. Ten-time champion Navy and Boston University are predicted to finish first and second, respectively. The Bison return three All-Patriot League selections from last year’s squad (Mike Nicholson, Erik Heinemann, Ben Seketa).

UMBC’s women posted a 5-3 dual record in 2012-13 and finished second at the America East Championships. The men compiled an undefeated record (7-0) during the regular season and then captured first place at the conference championship meet with a record 1,075 points.

Emma Levendoski (50 back, 100 back, 200 back), Katie Hetherington (one-meter, three-meter), Kelly Pontecorvo (500 free, 1,000 free), Lauren Perry (200 free) and Elizabeth Porcellio (200 IM) collected wins last year for the Bucknell women against UMBC, while Cameron James (50 free, 100 free, 200 free), Mike Nicholson (200 IM, 400 IM), Trevor Reitz (50 fly), Ben Seketa (200 breast) and Christian Treat (100 breast) won races on the men’s side.

Both Bison squads will next be in action Oct. 19 at George Washington. The next Bucknell home meet is Oct. 26 against Pittsburgh. This year’s expanded Patriot League Championships are slated for Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 19-22, in Annapolis, Md. With the addition of Boston U. and Loyola (Md.), the meet has expanded to a fourth day, beginning on Wednesday evening.
