Lupica's Two School Records Lead Men's Track and Field in Bison Opener
Release:   12/07/2013

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Christian Lupica set two new school records to highlight the Bucknell men’s track and field team’s performance in the Bison Opener, held Saturday in Gerhard Fieldhouse. The Bison, who were picked second in the Patriot League’s recently-released preseason poll, also turned in four first place finishes and three IC4A cuts in the full-day competition.

“We learned a lot about our program during this early season meet,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “Although we had a nice number of great individual performances, we also found out about a few weaknesses that we will be addressing this week. The flu bug hit us hard over the past couple of days, affecting some people more than others. I am confident that we will show great improvement over the next couple of months.”

Lupica set his first school record of the day in the 300 meter dash, finishing in first place with a time of 34.62. The junior followed that performance up with a strong showing in the 60 meter hurdles, breaking the program’s top mark in both the prelims and the finals of the event. His final time of 8.03, which placed him second, was also an IC4A cut time.

Freshman Malachi Bostic-Wattley made a significant impact in his first collegiate competition, turning in impressive performances in two sprint events. He took top honors in the semifinal of the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.12, and then followed that up with an IC4A cut time in the 200 meter dash, placing third when he crossed in 22.59.

Seniors Jacob Eaton Hall and Scott Weismiller also turned in first place finishes for Bucknell in the meet. Eaton Hall ran to victory in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.16, while Weismiller’s 15-3 performance in the pole vault tied him for first place.

Bucknell capped off its first meet of the 2013-14 campaign with a strong team performance, racing to an IC4A cut time in the 4x400 meter relay. The squad of junior Kevin Tapper, Eaton Hall, senior Dennis Logan and sophomore Anthony Menza combined for a time of 3:21.49 and a second place finish.

The Bison will resume competition after the holidays when they host the Bucknell Mini Meet on Saturday, Jan. 11.
