LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Megan McGurk (West Chester, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) spearheaded Bucknell’s impressive offensive performance in a 78-62 win over Towson on Wednesday, and then followed that up with supreme shooting accuracy against Penn on Saturday to earn this week’s Anaconda Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week award. The guard is the second consecutive Bison to earn the honor, as her classmate Claire DeBoer (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) garnered the accolade last week, and Bucknell becomes the first school to have two rookies recognized this season, a testament to the strength of its freshman class.
McGurk averaged 9.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Bison, shooting 75 percent from the field. On Wednesday, the rookie scored a career-high 14 points on 4-of-6 (.667) shooting from the field, 4-of-5 (.800) from long range and a perfect 2-of-2 from the line. All four of her three-pointers came in the first seven minutes of the contest, keeping Bucknell in the game early and setting up the eventual victory. She also chipped in three rebounds and two assists against the Tigers.
In Saturday’s tight game with Penn, McGurk was equally accurate in her shooting, hitting 2-of-2 from the field and knocking down the only three-pointer she attempted. The freshman also pulled down two boards and added an assist and a steal to her stat line as she helped the Bison whittle down their deficit to challenge the Quakers at the end. The rookie, who is playing 25.0 minutes per game as the team’s starting point guard, is currently averaging 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
McGurk and the Bison will conclude a three-game homestand on Tuesday night, welcoming UMBC to Sojka Pavilion for a 7 p.m. contest.
