LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell football senior defensive lineman Tracey Smith (Allen, Texas/Allen) on Wednesday was named a Third Team All-American by The Sports Network. The three-year starter is the first Bison to earn All-America honors since record-setting DB Bryce Robertson in 2011.
A First Team All-Patriot League selection, Smith was part of a strong Bison defensive line once again this past season. Bucknell ranked fourth nationally against the run, 14th in total defense and 18th in scoring defense, thanks in large part to Smith’s career high-tying 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He also added one pass breakup, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Smith, who was a Second Team All-Patriot League choice as a junior in 2012, finished his career with 43 games played, 32 starts, 125 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
A Preseason All-Patriot League pick this past summer, Smith was also outstanding in the classroom. A geology major, he was a semifinalist for the prestigious Campbell Trophy, a member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team and a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
In addition to his Patriot League and national honors, Smith recently earned the George Rieu Award at the Bucknell football team’s annual postseason banquet. The award is given to the team’s outstanding defensive lineman.
Smith joins Ed Burman (1995 – 2nd team), Kevin Eiben (2000 – 3rd team), Sean Conover (2004 – 2nd team) and Robertson (2011 – 1st team) as Bison to earn The Sports Network All-America honors since the award was started in 1987.
Smith was one of just six Patriot League players to be recognized by The Sports Network and one of just two on the defensive side of the ball.
Smith helped Bucknell to a 6-5 record in 2013 as the Bison finished above .500 for the second time in three years. Bucknell won five of its final six games.
