LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell swimming and diving teams spent part of their winter break on a training trip in Florida, but they return to competitive action this Saturday when they host Columbia (men) and Rutgers (women) at 1 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium. It will be the first meet for the Bison since a Patriot League dual meet at Colgate on Dec. 7.
Both Bucknell teams are off to outstanding starts this year as both are 5-1 overall and 4-0 against Patriot League competition. Among the team highlights have been the men handing Navy its first Patriot League dual meet loss ever and the women defeating Navy for the first time since 2005-06 and Colgate for the first time since 2004-05.
The women last started a season better than 5-1 in 2003-04 when they completed their second straight 6-0 campaign. The men are off to their best start since opening 2011-12 with a 6-1 mark.
Columbia’s men are 2-2 on the season with wins over Yale and Army. The Lions will be competing for the first time since the Princeton Invitational Dec. 6-8.
The Rutgers women have a solid 4-1 mark this year. The Scarlet Knights opened the season 4-0, but lost their last dual meet to Boston U., 168-132.
Columbia leads the all-time series against Bucknell’s men 9-0. The two teams have met every year since 2004-05. The last time they faced each other in Kinney Natatorium (2011-12) marked the closest meet in series history (129.5-111.5 Columbia win).
Saturday’s meeting between Bucknell and Rutgers will be the third in series history. The Scarlet Knights captured the first meeting in 2000-01 by a 176-60 score and then won by a 155-83 margin two years ago.
Both Bison squads will compete three more times in January. Next up is a meet at Army next Saturday, Jan. 11. A home meet against non-league foe Binghamton follows the next day.
