LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s basketball team earned two thrilling wins last week, a come-from-behind victory over Lafayette on Wednesday and an overtime triumph at Holy Cross on Saturday, improving to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League, and two Bison were acknowledged for their contributions to an impressive week of conference play on Monday. Freshman forward Claire DeBoer (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) was named the Anaconda Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week, while junior forward Audrey Dotson (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill School) was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week. DeBoer’s selection is her fourth of the season, as she previously garnered the accolade on Dec. 2, Dec. 23 and Jan.6, and she remains the only Patriot League freshman to be honored on more than one occasion.
After averaging a double-double (16.5 ppg, 13.0 rpg) in the first week of the Patriot League season, DeBoer continued to impress in the second week of action, averaging 14.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg to help Bucknell to its two wins. In Wednesday’s 75-72 victory over the Leopards, she contributed nine points, four rebounds and two assists, hitting all of her shots from the line.
In Saturday’s game at Holy Cross, the rookie hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining in the contest, sending the game into overtime where she scored four points to help the Bison to an 83-79 win over the Crusaders. DeBoer led Bucknell in both scoring and rebounding against Holy Cross, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She shot 5-of-9 (.556) from the field, 2-of-2 (1.000) from three and 8-of-10 (.800) from the line, while also handing out one assist and making two steals.
DeBoer has scored in double-digits in six of the 11 contests in which she has started, and continues to lead all Patriot League freshmen in both scoring and rebounding, ranking 17th in the Patriot League with 10.6 points per game and eighth in the conference with 7.2 boards per contest. She also ranks first in rebounding (11.3 rpg) and seventh in scoring (15.5 ppg) in Patriot League competition, once again leading all rookies.
Dotson, who has led Bucknell in both scoring and rebounding since the very first game of the season, played a crucial role in each of the Bison’s nail-biter victories. She was the team’s top scorer and rebounder against the Leopards, tallying a season-high 24 points on 7-of-14 (.500) from the field and 9-of-10 (.900) from the line to notch the ninth 20+ performance of her career and her sixth of the season. The forward also collected a game-high nine rebounds, dished out four assists and made two crucial steals, including the one that allowed teammate Tyler Craig to make the go-ahead basket with 1:34 remaining in the contest.
In Saturday’s overtime win at Holy Cross, Dotson scored 13 points, collected five rebounds and handed out two assists, helping the Bison hand the Crusaders their first conference loss of the season. Dotson, who has scored in double-digits in each of the 12 games in which she has started, is currently ranked third in the Patriot League in scoring with 16.9 points per game and seventh in the conference in rebounding with 7.2 boards per contest.
DeBoer, Dotson and the Bison, who have played three of their first four conference games on the road, will return home this week for two contests in Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell will welcome Navy, which defeated Army 74-64 on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the league, on Wednesday, while the Black Knights will visit Lewisburg on Saturday. Tip-off for both contests is scheduled for 7 p.m., and both games will be streamed live by Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
