Nicholson Wins 200 IM Title, Bison in Fourth at PL Championships
Release:   02/20/2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Mike Nicholson won his second career Patriot League individual title Thursday and set a school record in the process to highlight day two of the Patriot League Championships for the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team. The Bison are in fourth place in the team standings, just 29 points behind third-place Army.

Nicholson, who won the 400 IM crown as a freshman in 2011, captured the 200 IM Thursday by .06 seconds over runner-up Conor Campbell. Nicholson’s time of 1 minute, 48.13 seconds bettered his own school record (1:48.81) and was nearly a second faster than his winning prelims time. Additionally, it was an NCAA “B” cut time.

“Mike had a great performance and swam a gutsy race,” said Bison head coach Dan Schinnerer. “Navy’s Conor Campbell came on him at the end and he was able to hold him off. It’s been a little bit of time since Mike’s win his freshman year, so it was nice to see him get this. It is well deserved.”

Nicholson has now competed in 10 career individual events at the Patriot League Championships and has finished in the top seven in all 10. He has seven top-three showings and has now finished first (2014), second (2012) and third (2011, 2013) in the 200 IM during his career.

Ben Seketa (10th) and Wes Marberry (12th) also scored in the 200 IM for Bucknell. Seketa’s time of 1:51.70 placed him sixth in the program’s record book, while Marberry is now eighth (1:52.30).

Freshman Louis Behnen posted the second-best finish on the night for the Bison, placing fifth in the 500 free. His time of 4:26.53 is second in program history. Erik Heinemann was 11th in the 500 free and he moved to fifth on the program’s all-time list (4:30.84).

The only other individual swimming event was the 50 free and Steve Grune’s 13th-place showing made him the only Bucknell swimmer to score.

The diving contingent matched the 200 IM with three scorers as Jon Jones (7th), Tyler Wenzel (8th) and Patrick Alvermann (10th) each added points to the Bison total. It marked Jones’ best finish at the Patriot League Championships in five career events, while Alvermann was three spots better than his finish off the one-meter board last year.

The evening concluded with the 200 free relay taking fifth. Grune, Matt Hadley, Daniel Wallace and Trevor Reitz combined to touch the wall in 1:22.69, the No. 8 time in program history. Hadley has now been on all three of the Bison relays to compete over the first two days of the Patriot League Championships.

“We didn’t perform quite as well as we would have liked this morning, but we really picked it up tonight,” commented Schinnerer. “We hope to carry that momentum into tomorrow morning.”

The Patriot League Championships will continue Friday at Navy’s Lejeune Hall. Prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. and finals are slated for 6 p.m.
