DOVER, Del. – Corey Furman drove in three runs on a pair of doubles, Joe Ogren posted three singles and the Bucknell baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Iona 9-5 Sunday afternoon at Wesley College. It was the first win of the season for the Bison, while the Gaels fell to 1-1.
Sophomore right-hander Andrew Andreychik earned the win on the mound for Bucknell as he allowed three hits, four runs and struck out a career high-tying eight in 5.0 innings. Left-handed reliever Xavier Hammond pitched the final four innings to earn his second career save. Hammond yielded four hits and struck out three while allowing just one run on a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Bucknell (1-4) led by a 5-4 margin entering the eighth when it scored four unearned runs thanks to three errors by Iona in the inning. Justin Meier knocked in two runs with a double, while Furman drove in one with his second double in the contest.
The Bison took an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Sam Clark in the first. Iona tied the score in the bottom half of the frame, but Bucknell answered with four more when it batted around in the top of the second. Alex O’Neill and Joe Ogren posted RBI singles, while a two-run double by Furman knocked Iona starter John Nargoski (0-1) from the game.
The Gaels did get three runs back in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on Andreychik’s only two walks during the outing. Joe Torres knocked in two runs with a two-out single, while Matt Byrne followed with an RBI triple.
Andreychik retired the final 10 hitters he faced before giving way to Hammond, who got his first hitter to ground out to third.
Iona used four pitchers in the game.
