LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team, which earned a win in its Patriot League opener over Loyola last Saturday, will return to the courts for two matches this week, traveling to Mount St. Mary’s for a 3 p.m. contest on Thursday, before welcoming Navy to Lewisburg at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Bison were originally scheduled to play the Mount earlier in the season, but the match was postponed due to weather.
Bucknell enters this week’s competition with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Patriot League, having defeated Loyola by a score of 5-2 on Saturday. The win over the Greyhounds gave the Bison a victory in their Patriot League opener and their second triumph of the season, as they also defeated George Mason over spring break.
Bucknell earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles against Loyola, and also earned four points in singles play, taking every match except for the No. 1 and No. 6 bouts. Sophomore Maria Cioffi, junior Lydia Colvin and freshman Michele Urbinati were all 2-0 on the day, with Cioffi coming out on top at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. Colvin and Urbinati combined to win at No. 2 doubles, and then earned victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Cioffi currently leads the Bison in singles wins this season with a 11-6 record, and has also tallied a team-best 12-2 record in doubles play. She currently ranks 22nd in program history in both all-time singles wins (35-18) and all-time doubles wins (35-11), while senior Elena Vidrascu, who has a 2-3 record at No. 1 singles, ranks ninth in all-time victories with a 107-98 mark.
Mount St. Mary’s, which currently holds a 7-7 record, most recently picked up a pair of 7-0 victories last week with wins over Wagner and UMES. In their most recent match against UMES, the Mount won three of the matches by default, but also earned wins at No.1 and No. 2 doubles, as well as victories in all four of the singles bouts contested. Bucknell and Mount St. Mary’s have squared off 15 times since 1993, and the Bison have been victorious on 14 occasions, including a 4-3 win on March 27 of last season.
Navy, the team’s last opponent in a busy week, has proven to be a tough foe for Bucknell, as the Mids are currently 6-2 in the all-time series, which dates back to 2010. The Naval Academy was picked to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll, and has currently played to a 15-6 record. The Mids most recently earned a 6-1 win over Providence, and will open their conference slate against Colgate on Saturday before traveling to Lewisburg on Sunday.
After this week’s contests, the Bison will travel to Towson for a 2:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, April 2, before returning home for two more Patriot League contests.
