LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Nick Bybel broke the men’s tennis program record for single-season wins on Sunday afternoon, completing a 4-0 weekend, and was named the Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday in recognition of his stellar performance. Bybel, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year in men’s tennis, receives the award for the first time in his career.

Bybel went 2-0 against both Temple and Lafayette this weekend, helping the Bison to a 5-2 win over the Leopards on Sunday. On Saturday, he combined with senior Aidan Lynch to take an 8-4 win over Filip Stipcic and Hernan Vasconez at No. 1 doubles before playing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicolas Paulus at the top singles spot. The sophomore was equally impressive on Sunday, as he and Lynch triumphed over Brandon Goldstein and Brian Stefanowicz by a score of 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and he also earned a straight-set win (6-0, 6-4) over Goldstein at No. 1 singles.

Bybel currently holds a 25-9 record in singles play this season, and his win on Sunday broke the program’s record for single-season wins. Former Bison Mark Malloy played to a 24-9 record in 2007-08, while Evan Zimmer, who graduated last year, went 24-13 in his final campaign. Bybel, who has won seven consecutive singles matches and is undefeated in Patriot League play, has compiled a 13-4 mark at the top spot and his career record of 47-18 ties him for 18th at Bucknell in all-time singles victories. The sophomore also ranks 25th in all-time doubles victories (33-22) and 19th in all-time victories (80-40), and has an 8-6 record at No. 1 doubles this season, winning his last three matches with Lynch.

Bucknell concludes Patriot League dual play on Wednesday when it travels to Lehigh for a 3:30 p.m. match, and will be in action at the Patriot League men’s tennis tournament from April 24 to 27 in West Point, N.Y.
