LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Patriot League presented its eighth set of weekly softball awards on Monday, and Bucknell softball’s freshman pitcher Lara Bean (Alvin, Texas/Alvin) was honored as the conference’s Rookie of the Week for her two impressive outings against Lehigh this past weekend. The weekly honor is the first of Bean’s career, but she is the second member of Bucknell’s freshman class to be recognized this season, as classmate Jacee Almond was given the first Rookie of the Week award of the 2014 campaign.

Bean pitched 6.1 innings in the Bison’s 2-0 win over the Mountain Hawks on Saturday, improving her season record to 6-3 and combining with sophomore Amanda Fazio to shut out the first-place team in the Patriot League. In that outing, she allowed just two hits while striking out three batters. In Sunday’s solo game she relieved sophomore Dana Nielsen in the second stanza and allowed just one hit in her 5.1 innings of action. Bean also walked just one Mountain Hawk in that performance and struck out a career-high nine batters. The rookie allowed just three hits over the course of 11.1 innings and finished the weekend with a 0.00 ERA.

Bean, who has pitched a total of 70.1 innings in 19 appearances this season, currently ranks third in the Patriot League with a 2.39 ERA. She has made ten starts for the Bison and leads the league with a .190 opposing batting average. In addition, she has struck out 24 batters looking, also a conference-best.

Bucknell will not return to Patriot League play until it travels to Colgate on April 26 for a three-game series, but the team will see plenty of non-conference action before then, beginning with a doubleheader at Penn State on Wednesday. The first pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 6 p.m.
