LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell baseball junior Xavier Hammond (Broadheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The left-hander pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout Sunday to lead the Bison to a 9-0 victory over Army and earn a split of the four-game weekend series.
Hammond logged his second career complete game and first shutout as he limited the Black Knights to just four baserunners the entire game and pitched to just three batters over the minimum. He struck out six and just one Army player reached scoring position as Hammond improved to 2-3 on the year.
A first-year weekend starter after pitching primarily out of the bullpen his first two campaigns, Hammond has been especially effective against Patriot League opponents. He has yielded just three earned runs in 25.1 innings against conference foes and his ERA has dropped from 6.75 to 3.83 over his last three outings.
Hammond is tied for second on the Bison with a career-high 30 strikeouts this season. He has walked just eight hitters in 49.1 innings and he has one save.
Hammond was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career. This is the third time in four weeks a Bison was honored as Andrew Andreychik was cited March 24 and April 1.
Bucknell will return to action Wednesday with a non-league game at Towson. The Bison will head to Lafayette this weekend for their final regular-season road Patriot League series. Doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday with Hammond likely to pitch the final game of the series.
