The true story in the contest however, was the performance of Boston University’s Melanie Russell, who pitched seven perfect innings to improve to 9-3 on the season and guarantee the win for the Terriers. Russell faced 21 batters, striking out four, and did not allow a base runner.
Fazio, who received the loss in the day’s first game, pitched 5.1 innings during which she allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking one. Sophomore Cindy Cherness faced three batters in the bottom of the sixth, recording one strikeout.
The Bison recorded the first hit of the second contest when junior Kristen Zahn singled up the middle in the top of the second, but the Terriers were the first to score, tallying two runs on an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
Zahn recorded another single in top of the fourth and Fazio singled to shortstop in the top of the sixth, but the Bison were unable to advance a runner past second base, allowing a four-run fourth inning to give Boston University the 6-0 win.
Freshman Lara Bean pitched the first 4.1 innings of the second game, falling to 7-5 on the season with the loss. The rookie gave up four hits and three earned runs while striking out one batter. Cherness faced two batters in the fifth, allowing two hits and two earned runs, and sophomore Dana Nielsen finished the game, permitting two hits and one run in 1.2 innings of action.
After the first day of the final regular-season weekend, the Patriot League standings remain unchanged, as Lehigh took two wins over Army at West Point. Boston University remains one game behind the Mountain Hawks, while the Bison and Black Knights are currently tied, with Bucknell owning the tiebreaker.
