LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman pitcher Jeff Gottesman (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando) was named the Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week on Monday as the league announced the first weekly awards of the 2016 season. Gottesman pitched four shutout innings of relief in his first career appearance this past Saturday at James Madison.
Gottesman, a right-hander, came on in relief of starter Dan Keller in the fifth inning of the nightcap of a doubleheader. He allowed just two hits and struck out five in his four innings of work and left with the Bison leading the Dukes 5-1 entering the ninth inning.
James Madison hit just .143 against Gottesman and the rookie was the only pitcher on the Bison staff who pitched more than one inning last weekend and did not allow an earned run.
Gottesman is Bucknell’s first Rookie of the Week award winner since current Bison senior Andrew Andreychik on April 8, 2013.
Bucknell (2-2) split the four-game season-opening weekend series with James Madison. They Bison will play a three-game set this coming weekend at Tennessee Tech.
