BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Bucknell wrapped up a successful opening weekend of softball with a 5-4 win over Hampton on Sunday afternoon at the Gardner-Webb Tournament, The Bison went 4-1 at the event, posting two wins over Hampton and two over Gardner-Webb, while dropping their lone game against Seton Hall.
The Bison erased an early 4-1 deficit with one run in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth to beat the Pirates for the second time in three days. Senior Lara Bean pitched four hitless innings of relief to get the win, striking out two and walking one. Freshman Raeanne Geffert hurled two scoreless innings of relief to record the save, giving up one hit and no walks while striking out two.
Seniors Carolyn Wan and Christina Martinez delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Bison scored the game-winning run on a throwing error on Martinez’s single.
Bean and Geffert allowed just one hit through the final three innings to help Bucknell preserve the one-run lead.
Bucknell had 12 hits, including two triples by sophomore Anna Gimmestad. Junior Paulina Gutkin and Wan had two singles apiece, while freshman Marisa Alemany, sophomore Lauren Hadley, junior Meghan Kovac, senior Chaylen Andolino, senior Christina Martinez, and sophomore Ryanne Rokos each contributed one single.
Bucknell returns to action with another trip south when it plays five games at the Winthrop Invitational on Feb. 24-26. The Bison will play games against North Carolina Central, Winthrop, ETSU, Eastern Kentucky, and Mount St. Mary’s
