LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Christine Bendzinski was named Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced by the league on Wednesday. Joining her on the Academic All-Patriot League team was senior Sarah Chandler and junior Lauren Hudson, as Bucknell earned a league-high three selections to the 10-member squad.
Bendzinski becomes the seventh Bison and the first since Emily Waksmunski in 2014 to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition for the indoor season. A cell biology and biochemistry major, Bendzinski has earned her fifth Academic All-Patriot League citation. A three-year Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection, Bendzinski has made the Academic All-Patriot League squad every season since becoming eligible her sophomore year. The junior was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last spring.
Bendzinski helped lead the Bison to their 17th indoor title and the first since 2015, winning three gold medals. She won the mile for the third consecutive year, while breaking her own school and Patriot League record in the 3,000-meter with a time of 9:27.37. Bendzinski joined Chandler, Emma Harris and Margaret Sliney to set the school and league record in the 4x8 relay with a time of 8:50.58.
Chandler earns her second Academic All-Patriot League honor. A psychology major, Chandler posted a 3.85 grade-point average in the fall and has made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of her four years.
In addition to winning goal in the 4x8 relay, she helped a DMR team consisting of Sliney, Kathleen Fitzgerald and Emily Ryan set the Patriot League record in the race with a time of 11:42.17 en route to a first-place finish. Chandler also won the 1,000m for the second straight season.
Hudson receives Academic All-Patriot League accolades for the first time in her career. An english and creative writing major, Hudson has made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every year since arriving to Lewisburg.
Hudson earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors at the league championships, taking second in the high jump with a leap of 5-7, good for third on Bucknell’s top-10 list.
Bucknell has now been represented on the Academic All-Patriot League team for the seventh consecutive year, earning at least three spots for the fifth time.
The Patriot League champs return to Boston to compete in the ECAC Indoor Championships on Mar. 4-5.
