LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell scored four straight goals midway through the second half and then rallied with two more in the closing minutes for a narrow 8-7 win over visiting Manhattan in non-conference women’s lacrosse action Sunday at Graham Field. The Bison continued their great start to the season, improving to 5-1 overall.
Audrey Walsh, Christina Manis, and Sarah Galzerano had two goals apiece for Bucknell, while Manis added three assists, and Galzerano tallied a pair of helpers. The Bison finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots on goal.
Bucknell trailed 2-0 early after a pair of Manhattan scores on free position shots, but the Bison scored six of the next seven goals. Walsh opened the team’s scoring with a goal off an assist from Eve Lukowski with 19:49 left in the half, and Galzerano tied the game with a short-handed tally just over five minutes later. Manis notched her first assist of the day on the game-tying score.
That was all the scoring in the first half as the team’s battled to a low-scoring 2-2 tie. Manhattan again struck first in the second half to go up 3-2, and held that lead for over seven minutes until Bucknell went on a 4-0 run.
Bucknell’s rally was started by Galzerano with 19:03 left on the clock and spanned 2:26 of playing time. Walsh followed with a goal 44 seconds after Galzerano’s, and Manis and Bridget Shaffrey tacked on goals 20 seconds apart to put the Bison up 6-3 with 16:37 to play.
Manhattan countered with a 4-0 run of its own to go up 7-6. The Jaspers’ had a potential fifth goal called off during that stretch after the player’s stick was deemed illegal.
Trailing 7-6, Maddy Molinari came through with the equalizer at the 3:32 mark, and Manis scored the game-winner just 14 seconds later. Galzerano assisted on both goals.
Bucknell goalie Jamie Dewitt made five saves to secure the win. Nikki Prestiano stopped nine shots in a losing effort.
Manhattan, which dropped to 0-3, was led by Sarah Lang with three goals. Darby Nolan added a pair of scores.
The Bison return to action with a road game at Temple on Sunday, March 12. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Howarth Field.
