VERO BEACH, Fla. – Bucknell softball rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter’s on Monday, competing for the second day on its spring break trip to Florida. The Bison doubled-up the Peacocks by an 8-4 score in the first game, and followed that with a decisive 7-2 victory in game two.
The Bison upped their impressive record to 12-4 with two more non-conference wins. They will play the Peacocks in another doubleheader on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Saint Peter’s dropped to 0-2.
Game 1 – Bucknell 8, Saint Peter’s 4
Anna Gimmestad hit a two-run home run in a three-run top of the first inning for Bucknell, and the Bison cruised to an 8-4 win over Saint Peter’s in the opening game. Gimmestad’s second blast of the season went over the left-center field fence and plated Marisa Alemany, who led off the game with a walk. Lauren Hadley followed Gimmestad with a single, stole second and later scored on a passed ball.
The Bison pulled away with three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Meghan Kovac and Paulina Gutkin led off with back-to-back doubles, and Ryanne Rokos followed with a single. All three runners would score in the inning.
Bucknell finished with seven hits, led by Kovac with a single and double. Gutkin added a pair of walks to her double. Celina Antonellis also singled.
Lara Bean pitched all seven innings to get the win, improving to 6-1 on the season.
Game 2 – Bucknell 7, Saint Peter’s 2
Bucknell actually trailed 2-1 after five innings, but rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth on its way to a 7-2 victory in the second game.
Kovac highlighted Bucknell’s big inning with an RBI triple, while Chaylen Andolino drove in two runs with a single. Hadley, Gutkin, and Alemany all had RBI singles.
Raeanne Geffert pitched a complete game for the Bison. She allowed two runs on four hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight. Geffert improved to 6-2 and has 50 strikeouts in 53.2 innings.
Alemany, Gimmestad, and Hadley all had two hits in the game. Kovac, Gutkin, and Andolino contributed one apiece.
