LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 2017 Patriot League champion Bucknell women’s basketball team earned a 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will open at third-seeded Maryland at the Xfinity Center on Friday at noon. The game will air regionally on ESPN2 and will stream live on WatchESPN.
Bucknell received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning both the Patriot League regular season and tournament titles. The Bison clinched a berth with a thrilling 79-71 overtime win over Navy in the championship game.
The Bison have already set a program record for wins in a season for the second straight year, going 27-5. They enter the tournament with a 10-game winning streak. Senior Claire DeBoer was named the Patriot League Player of the Year and then added Patriot League Tournament MVP honors after tallying 30 points and 10 rebounds in the title game.
Maryland is the No. 3 seed in the tournament despite being ranked third in the nation in the Coaches Poll and fourth in the AP Poll. The Terrapins also earned an automatic bid after going 30-2 and winning the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They rank first in the nation in scoring at 89.9 points per game.
A matchup in 1985 is the only game between Bucknell and Maryland in program history. The Terps won that game 95-52.
The winner between Bucknell and Maryland will play the winner of sixth-seeded West Virginia and 11th-seeded Elon.
Bucknell will make its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the No. 14 seed is its highest of the three. The Bison were the No. 15 seed in a loss to Baylor in the 2002 tournament and were a No. 16 seed in a loss to North Carolina in the 2008 tournament.
