LEWISBURG, Pa. – In a season that is expected to have a wide-open playoff race, Bucknell did what it needed to do in its first Patriot League softball series, completing a three-game sweep of Lafayette with an 8-1 win Sunday at Becker Field.

Bucknell improved to 18-5 overall and is one of three teams that opened league play with a 3-0 record this weekend. Lafayette fell to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Bison looked much better at the plate on Sunday than they did in their first two wins over the Leopards on Saturday, finishing with 12 hits, including four doubles. Sophomore Lauren Hadley, who had two hits on the day, had the first big hit of the game with a two run double off the bottom of the right-center field fence to give her team an early 2-1 lead.

Hadley, junior Meghan Kovac, and junior Paulina Gutkin, the 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup, all singled, doubled, and drove in two runs. Senior Carolyn Wan joined the group with a single and double.

Freshman Raeanne Geffert recorded her second complete-game win in as many days to improve to 10-2 on the season. She gave up one run on three hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out seven. In her 14 innings of work in the series, Geffert gave up two runs, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out 12 batters.

Bucknell never trailed in the game. With a four-run lead after four innings, the Bison tacked on one run in the fifth and then put the game out of reach with three in the sixth. Kovac and Gutkin had RBI singles in the three-run inning, while Jackyln Tyburk tallied an RBI with her second hit-by-pitch of the game.

Two of Lafayette’s three hits went for extra bases as Kristyn Marinelli and Maddie Wensel each doubled. Samantha Sweigart added a single. Geffert retired the final 17 batters of the game in order.

Chipping in with one hit apiece for Bucknell were Julienne Egofske, Anna Gimmestad, Christina Martinez, and Celina Antonellis.

Bucknell is back at Becker Field for its next Patriot League series when it hosts Colgate on Saturday and Sunday.
