LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell placed a league-high four student-athletes on the 2017 Men's Lacrosse Academic All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced Wednesday. Senior defenseman Mike Schiappa, junior attackman Will Sands, sophomore goalie Christian Klipstein, and sophomore midfielder Reed Malas were all named to the 12-man team.

Bucknell becomes the second team since the award's inception in 2011 to place as many as four players on the Academic All-Patriot League squad. Colgate had four honorees in 2012. The previous high for the Bison was three in 2011.

All four Bison named to the squad excel in the classroom and are also key starters on the field. The most veteran of the group is Schiappa, a talented close defenseman who started 52 of the final 53 games of his career. A team co-captain this spring, Schiappa was also an Academic All-Patriot League selection in 2016. He majors in biomedical engineering and has compiled a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average through seven semesters. Schiappa has plans to attend dental school at Columbia University after graduating from Bucknell next month.

Sands, a history major with a 3.28 GPA, is Bucknell's most-decorated player in terms of on-field accomplishments. Earlier this season the team co-captain was named one of 50 national candidates for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the national player of the year. He finished the season with 62 points on 20 goals and 42 assists, with the assist total the third-highest in the nation this season and second-highest in Bucknell history. Sands will enter his senior season ranked fifth in school history in career assists and seventh in career points. In addition to his academic honor, Sands was also named to the All-Patriot League First Team earlier in the week.

Malas features the team's highest GPA at a stellar 3.97 on a 4.00 scale while majoring in accounting and financial management. Malas ran with Bucknell's first offensive midfield line in all 13 games this season, producing career-best numbers with 14 goals, 11 assists and 25 points. He recorded a season-best five points on three goals and two assists in a win over Delaware, and he also collected a hat trick against Colgate.

A sophomore in his second season as Bucknell's starting goalie, Klipstein has compiled a 3.66 GPA while majoring in psychology. A two-time Patriot League Goalie of the Week in 2017, and a five-time honoree in his career, Klipstein averaged 10.8 saves per game in 2017. He earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors earlier this week, his second straight season on the all-league team.

Loyola's Brian Sherlock was named the 2017 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Bucknell's quartet was joined on the Academic All-PL team by Army's Dan Grabher, Boston University's Christian Carson-Banister and Jack Wilson, Colgate's Will Blumenberg, Holy Cross' Henry Lilly, Lafayette's Erik Cannon, Lehigh's Cody Triolo, and Loyola's Sherlock.
