LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Mike Castellani has been named Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week, following his series-clinching performance Sunday at Navy in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinal Series.
The left-handed pitcher was fantastic in his outing against the Midshipmen, tossing a three-hit shutout, striking out six while walking two. Castellani was perfect through the first 4.0 innings of the contest. It was the senior's third complete game shutout of the year, tying him with Andrew Andreychik (2014) for the most shutouts in a single season in Bucknell history.
A three-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, Castellani is 5-1 on the mound with a 3.30 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 71.0 innings pitched. For his career, he ranks in the top-10 in ERA (3.58), wins (15), appearances (55), shutouts (3) and innings pitched (216.1).
Bucknell's pitching led the way in helping the Bison win their first postseason series since clinching the Patriot League title over Lehigh in 2014, and needed just two pitchers to get the job done.
Connor Van Hoose, a unanimous First Team All-Patriot League honoree, pitched in game one of the series and continued his dominance over Navy. He also pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. The right-handed pitcher was perfect through the first 5.0 innings of the game. Van Hoose now has 90 strikeouts on the year, the second most in a single season in Bison history.
The Bison shut down a Midshipmen team that entered the series with the league's top offense, leading the Patriot League in nearly every category. Navy, who placed seven on All-Patriot League Teams, was held to one run in 18.0 innings on six hits while striking out 12 times. Entering with a team batting average of .303, the Midshipmen hit .105 for the series.
Bucknell (21-26), who has won two Patriot League titles as the No. 4 seed, has advanced to the Patriot League Championship Series and will take on No. 2 seed Holy Cross (May 19-20) in a best-of-three series, which will broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
