HERSHEY, Pa. -- Chris Tanabe, who is set to join the Bucknell men's golf team this fall, tied for second place at the Pennsylvania Junior Championship this week at the Hershey Country Club East Course. Tanabe had the lead at the halfway point of the 36-hole event after shooting a 3-under-par 68 in the opening round. He closed with a 74, falling by one stroke on the final hole to Palmer Jackson of Hannastown Golf Club.
Tanabe, playing out of Sewickley Heights GC, made five birdies and only two bogeys in his terrific opening round. In Tuesday's final round, he bounced back from a double-bogey at No. 16 with a birdie on the 17th after his approach shot hit the pin. But Jackson pulled out the win with a par at 18, while Tanabe made a bogey after his approach found a greenside bunker.
Cole Berger of White Manor CC also tied for second with a 142 total. The championship field consisted of 123 players aged 14-18.
Tanabe, who finished fourth in this event last year, was the 2016 Class 2A Pennsylvania state champion while a senior at Quaker Valley High School. He also led his team to the state title after a runner-up finish the previous year.
