LEWISBURG, Pa. – Garrett Sommer won the 3-meter dive at the Bucknell men's swimming & diving team's season opener against UMBC on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.

The freshman posted a score of 233.63, the ninth best in program history and 45.83 more than the second-place finisher.

Four other Bison, and two relay teams, raced to runner-up finishes. Sommer also took second in the 1-meter dive (199.88) while Matt Rakovec was the second swimmer to touch the wall in both the 200 IM (2:02.62) and 400 IM (4:20.11).

Kevin Flynn (200 backstroke, 1:52.83) and Mitch Gavars (200 freestyle, 1:48.52) were Bucknell's other individual runner-up finishers. 

Flynn, Kevin Adams-Mardi, Jacob Lubinski and Nate Romanowski teamed to take second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.57. Flynn, Gavars, Nico Pagni and Rakovec clocked in at 3:18.48 to finish second in the 400 freestyle.

No team scores were kept at the event. The Bison return to the pool on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14 when they travel to Bryant and Boston University.
