LEWISBURG, Pa. – Andrew Funk, a 6’4” guard from Warrington, Pennsylvania, signed a National Letter of Intent on Monday and will join the Bucknell men’s basketball team in 2018-19. Funk is currently in his senior year at Archbishop Wood High School, which competes in basketball in the competitive Philadelphia Catholic League.
Funk is the captain of the Archbishop Wood team this season. A year ago he was named Sixth Man of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer after helping a 28-3 Vikings team to the Philadelphia Catholic League championship, the District 12 title and eventually the Class 5A PIAA state championship.
Even in a reserve role on a senior-laden team, Funk scored in double figures 11 times last season, including a 10-point game against Meadville in the state championship game. With four seniors graduating from that championship squad, including Villanova recruit Collin Gillespie, Funk is projected to take on a much larger role in 2017-18.
“Andrew is a combo guard with great size and a great understanding of how to play the game,” said head coach Nathan Davis. “He shoots the three very well and can create for himself or others off the dribble. Andrew comes from a great high school program. He is a winner and will be a terrific addition to our program and to Bucknell University. We could not be more excited that Andrew is going to be a Bison.”
Also a member of the Jersey Shore Warriors AAU team, Funk is the middle man in a set of five brothers. One of his two older brothers, Tommy, is currently a sophomore guard at Army West Point, meaning the two will go head-to-head in Patriot League play for two seasons. Tommy started every game last season for Army, ranked second in the league in assists, and was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team.
Bucknell captured Patriot League regular-season and tournament championships in 2016-17 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in team history. The Bison are in the midst of a difficult road stretch to start the 2017-18 season and will next play at North Carolina on Wednesday night.
