LEWISBURG, Pa. – Drew Phipps knocked off No. 16 C.J. LaFragola in sudden victory overtime, and No. 14 Tyler Smith improved to 10-0 in dual action, but the Bucknell wrestling team was edged by Brown, 18-13, Saturday evening at Davis Gym.
After opening the dual with three-straight wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds, the Bison (2-9, 1-3 EIWA) ceded six of the next seven bouts to suffer their first loss to the Bears (2-3, 2-0 EIWA) since the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, seven of the 10 bouts were decided by two or fewer points, including three by just one.
D.J. Hollingshead (165) gave Bucknell early momentum by downing Jon Viruet, 3-2, on a takedown in the third period's final minute. Then, Nick Stephani (174), who Friday pulled off a tiebreaker victory over Harvard's Josef Johnson, escaped in the third period's final 30 seconds to edge Bryce Rogers by a 4-3 margin.
Phipps (184) gave the Bison a 9-0 lead with his upset of LaFragola. Phipps, who was 0-5 against nationally ranked wrestlers in his collegiate career entering the night, scored a takedown with 21 seconds left in the sudden victory period of overtime to stun LaFragola, 6-4. Phipps previously faced off against LaFragola, who was then unranked, on Jan. 22, 2017; LaFragola won that bout by a single point, 4-3.
After watching their lone nationally ranked wrestler fall, the Bears responded by winning the next four bouts to take a 12-9 lead. After Brown was deducted a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct following the 133 bout, Smith (141) put Bucknell up by a 13-11 margin with his commanding 22-9 major decision win over Jimmy Pawelski.
Smith posted nine takedowns during his victory, securing the bonus point for having over a minute of riding time. Smith, who is a perfect 10-0 in duals during the 2017-18 campaign, has now won his past 20 dual bouts; he suffered his last loss on Jan. 13, 2017 to Virginia's George DiCamillo, who was ranked seventh in the country at the time.
Zach Krause (149) and Justin Staudenmayer (157) ultimately won their bouts to propel the Bears to victory, snapping an eight-dual losing skid to the Bison in the process.
Bucknell next hits the road to face Penn (12 p.m.) and Columbia (7 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 27.
