CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Jamie DeWitt was recognized as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and the Bison Athlete of the Week after leading the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to a 5-4 double overtime victory at Robert Morris on Feb. 10.
DeWitt made four of her 11 saves on free-position attempts in overtime to help the Bison emerge victorious in their season opener for the fourth-straight season. Her effort also helped first-year head coach Remington Steele earn his first career win in his debut.
In sudden-victory play, the Colonials were awarded five free-position shots. DeWitt made point-blank saves on four of them and had the fifth covered as it skipped wide of the right post. Her play set up Mary Margaret Kenney to net the game-winning goal on an eight-meter attempt with 1:45 on the clock.
Bucknell's overtime win over Robert Morris was its first since 2012, a 16-15 victory over Liberty on March 21 at Graham Field. DeWitt finished two stops shy of her career-best total, set on March 19, 2016 in a 17-7 loss at Boston University.
This is DeWitt's first Patriot League weekly accolade. Last season, Maddy Molinari captured three Midfielder of the Week awards while Annie Gilbertson was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 27 following a 14-10 road victory over Monmouth and a 16-6 home rout of Wagner.
DeWitt's Bison Athlete of the Week nod is also her first; in 2017, Gilbertson earned this award on the strength of her performance against the Hawks and Seahawks.
DeWitt and the Bison next travel to Hofstra for a Saturday, Feb. 17 contest. The opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
