Lewisburg, Pa. – Senior Christine Bendzinski was named Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the Patriot League All-Academic Team, as announced by the league on Monday. Joining her on the Academic All-Patriot League Team was junior Colleen Buckley, and seniors Alexa DiGregorio and Lauren Hudson. Bucknell earned a league-high four selections to the 10-member squad.
Bendzinski has now won the last four possible Scholar-Athlete awards. She was also honored in cross country this fall, and both indoor and outdoor track and field last year. A cell biology and biochemistry major with a 3.83 cumulative grade-point average, Bendzinski earned her seventh Academic All-Patriot League citation. A three-year Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection, Bendzinski has made the Academic All-Patriot League squad every season since becoming eligible her sophomore year. The senior was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last spring.
Last week, Bendzinski helped lead the Bison to their 18th Patriot League Indoor title, winning two gold medals. She won the mile (4:56.48) for the fourth year in a row, becoming just the fourth athlete in league history to win an individual indoor event four straight years. The Hebron, Conn., native was also a huge factor in helping lead the 4X800 relay to victory by running an anchor leg of 2:09.03; the fastest time of any split in the field by over two seconds. The senior finished a stride behind Colleen Buckley in the 3,000-meter run to take second place with a time of 9:54.03.
Buckley earns her second Academic All-Patriot League honor, as she also earned one in cross country earlier this year. Buckley has a 3.60 cumulative GPA.
She was named Patriot League Athlete of the Meet at last week’s indoor Championships, and was integral in helping the Bison secure their 18th indoor championship. In addition to winning gold in the 3,000m (9:53.74), Buckley also won the 5,000m (16:55.89) and moved up to second on Bucknell’s top-10 list. The junior competed in the mile at Patriot League Championships as well and took fourth with an ECAC-qualifying standard of 5:01.88.
Hudson receives Academic All-Patriot League accolades for the second time in her career. An English and creative writing major with a 3.68 GPA, Hudson has made the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every year since arriving in Lewisburg.
The senior from Amherst, N.Y., earned First Team All-Patriot League honors at the league championships, taking first in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.
DiGregorio earned Academic All-Patriot League accolades for the first time in her college career. An education and biology major, the senior has made the Academic Honor Roll every year at Bucknell. She posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall semester and carries a 3.95 cumulative GPA.
She also took home Second Team All-Patriot League honors at the league championships after finishing second in the long jump, leaping 18-10 ¾. The Pilesgrove, N.J., native had an 11th-place finish in the triple jump (35-10 ½).
Bucknell has now been represented on the Academic All-Patriot League team for the eighth consecutive year, earning four spots for the third time.
The Patriot League champs return to Boston to compete in the ECAC Indoor Championships on March 3-4.
