ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bucknell women's water polo team went 1-1 on the opening day of the Wolverine Invitational, held at Canham Natatorium.

After falling to No. 17 Long Beach State, 9-6, in their morning game, the Bison edged Iona, 6-5, in their evening tilt. Defense was the story in both games, and Manuela Herrera led the way with a combined 19 saves.

Against the Gaels, Shyla Lintz netted the game-winning goal off an Emily Konishi feed with 4:26 remaining in regulation. After Lintz's goal, Herrera made two of her 11 saves to keep Iona from evening the score.

The Bison raced out to an early 3-1 lead only to have the Gaels net three of the next four goals to make it a 4-4 game at the half. The teams then traded goals in the third quarter, setting up Lintz and Herrera's heroics.

Konishi led Bucknell with three points (2g-1a) while Hannah Schultz netted two of Iona's goals.

Against the Beach, a Sarah Mooney strike with five seconds left to play in the second quarter gave the Bison a 6-5 halftime lead. Long Beach ultimately outscored Bucknell, 4-0, the rest of the way to emerge a 9-6 victor.

Bucknell's goals were scored by six different players, five of whom also registered an assist. Herrera finished that outing with eight saves.

The Bison continue Wolverine Invitational play tomorrow, taking on No. 9 Michigan (9:40 a.m.) and No. 19 CSU Northridge (12:20 p.m.).
