LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's water polo team scored six of the game's final seven goals to topple No. 23 Harvard, 10-5, on Saturday night at Kinney Natatorium.
Nina Benson led the Bison past the aggressive, physical Crimson, recording all four (3g-1a) of her points during that decisive 6-1 run. She also registered a team-best four steals to help stymie Harvard's attack, which only mustered 12 shots on net over the course of the contest.
With its victory, its second over a nationally ranked Crimson team this season, Bucknell will face Brown in the CWPA Championship's fifth-place game on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Beyond Benson, Emily Konishi and Kali Hyham played a large role in the Bison's offensive success. Konishi registered four assists while Hyham added a hat trick. In addition, Sarah Mooney potted two goals, including a beautiful tip in of a Konishi shot early in the second quarter.
Colleen Barron and Shyla Lintz each drew three ejections while Manuela Herrera made seven saves, including three in the final frame. Three of Bucknell's goals came on the man advantage, including its final two of the contest.
At the end of the first half, the teams were locked in a 4-4 stalemate. From that point on, the Bison took control of the game. In the third quarter, they netted four unanswered goals, with Benson scoring two and assisting on a Lintz strike from in tight.
While Harvard opened the fourth quarter's scoring, Bucknell capitalized on two man advantages less than two minutes apart to make it a 10-5 game.
This is the second time the Bison knocked off the Crimson in 2018. On April 14, Bucknell stunned then No. 19 Harvard, 9-8, to score its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2016. In that game, Barron potted the game-winning goal with 2:59 remaining in regulation while Lintz and Marta Considine each recorded hat tricks.
The fifth-seeded Bison, now 15-18, wrap up their time at the CWPA Championship tomorrow with their fifth-place game against the seventh-seeded Bears.
