LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell head coach John McBride announced Monday that four student-athletes will join the Bucknell men’s water polo team for the 2018 season.

The incoming freshmen hail from the United States and Hungary. The class includes a four-time conference champion, a four-year leading scorer and a former member of the Hungarian National Team.

In 2017, Bucknell posted a 19-12 (10-0 CWPA) record and was ranked No. 20 in the final CWPA poll. The Bison won their second-straight MAWPC East Region regular-season title behind their undefeated mark but went on to place third at the MAWPC Tournament. They lose starting netminder Charlie Niehaus and strong two-way players Jeff Hagen and Tommy Stupp to graduation. Niehaus was a two-time All-MAWPC selection while Hagen was honored on the 2017 All-MAWPC Second Team and 2016 All-MAWPC Tournament Second Team.


Bence Fazekas
Budapest, Hungary, Kempelen Farkas Gimnazium

Before Bucknell: Played on the Hungarian National Team for two years … helped club team take fourth at the 2016-17 Hungarian National U18-19 Championship, fourth at the 2015-16 U17-18 Championship, sixth at the 2014-15 U17-18 Championship and sixth at the 2013-14 U16 Championship … helped Team FTC win the 2016 Turbo Cup in Barcelona, Spain … member of club team that took fifth at the 2012-13 Regional Championship … also helped club team win an 2015 international tournament held in Pécs, Hungary and finish fifth at a 2014 international tournament played in Slovakia.

Personal: Bence Fazekas … born April 30, 1999 in Budapest, Hungary … son of Zsolt Fazekas and Krisztina Molnar … has an older sister … maintained a perfect grade point average in high school.

Wilton, Conn., Wilton High School

Before Bucknell: Played for the Chelsea Piers Water Polo Club … led its varsity high school club team in scoring all four years with the program, capturing four-straight Offensive Player of the Year awards … helped team win 2017 Greenwich High School Cardinal Tournament … named to the all-tournament team four times … member of 2014 USAWP Development National Team … spent 2017-18 season with the New York Athletic Club Water Polo … member of 2016 and 2015 Lake Club Senior Tournament champion squads … four-year letterwinner in swimming at Wilton High School … captained team in 2017 and earned Leadership Award in 2016 … earned all-state honors in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM in 2016 … member of all-state 200 freestyle relay team in 2015 … captured All-FCIAC accolades in the 50 freestyle in 2017 and 100 freestyle in 2016 … six-time member of the Fairfield County Swim League All-Tournament Team.

Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville High School

Before Bucknell: Lettered in water polo, swimming and cross country at Libertyville High School … in water polo, was a two-time all-section and all-conference selection … also captained team and earned its MVP and Most Improved awards … made 338 saves in 2018 and 352 in 2017 … netted one goal each year from the cage … in swimming, helped team capture 2018 and 2016 section titles … captained cross country team and took home Most Dedicated and Coaches’ awards.
