LAS VEGAS, N.V. – The Bucknell wrestling team wrapped up its time at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Seth Hogue advanced the furthest in the championship bracket, reaching the round of 16 behind a 7-5 win over Army West Point's Knox Fuller. In the round of 16, he faced off against top-seeded Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, Intermat's third-ranked wrestler at 149. Hogue put up a fight but lost by fall in 2:07. He was then eliminated with a 5-2 loss in his first consolation-bracket bout to Binghamton's Frankie Garcia.
Drew Phipps reached the round of 32 on the strength of a solid 9-2 victory over Michigan State's Shwan Shadaia. In the round of 32, he was pitted against the seventh seed, Wisconsin's Ricky Robertson. Robertson, who is slotted 11th in the Intermat rankings at 184, scored a takedown in the final minute of the third period to top Phipps by a single point, 6-5.
Phipps dominated Duke's Kaden Russell in his first consolation-bracket bout, winning 17-5 by major decision. He then met Northern Iowa's Drew Foster, the fourth seed and Intermat's seventh-ranked wrestler at 184. Foster, who was upset by 11th-seeded Taylor Venz of Nebraska in the round of 16, ultimately toppled Phipps by major decision to stay alive.
Garrett Hoffman picked up one of Bucknell's most impressive victories of the day in the round of 64 at 197. Hoffman squared off against Navy's Steban Cervantes, who placed fourth at the 2017 EIWA Championships and went 2-2 at his first NCAA tournament that season. Hoffman, who is in his first season wrestling at 197, posted a solid 5-2 victory over the senior Midshipman.
Like Phipps, Hoffman ran into a nationally ranked Wisconsin wrestler in the round of 32: No. 18 Hunter Ritter. The ninth-seeded wrestler at the Cliff Keen Invitational, Ritter edged Hoffman by a tight 3-2 margin. Hoffman then dropped a 5-4 decision to Oklahoma's Andrew Dixon to be eliminated.
Bucknell ultimately finished 42nd with 9.5 points. No. 2 Ohio State (155.5), No. 9 Michigan (140) and No. 12 Arizona State (113.5) were the top three teams.
The Bison faced eight seeded opponents on Friday and wrestlers from four different ranked teams. Fifteen teams ranked in the most recent USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll are competing at the Cliff Keen Invitational, including four in the top 10. More than 100 ranked wrestlers, over 50 percent of the NCAA total, were expected to take the mat at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Next up, the Bison will host Pitt, currently slotted 24th in the nation, on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion.
